Plus size circle skirt pattern and fabric layout guide
Handle a larger circle skirt diameter with accurate measurements, balanced panels, waistband support, and fabric-fit checks.

A plus-size circle skirt uses the same geometry as every other circle skirt. The practical difference is that a larger waist opening creates a larger outer diameter, so the pattern-making workflow needs more deliberate layout and support checks. Do not grade from an arbitrary standard size when direct measurements are available.
Larger-diameter example
For a 120 cm finished waist, a full-circle waist radius is about 120 / (2 x pi) = 19.1 cm. Add an 80 cm finished length and 2 cm hem allowance, and the cutting outer radius is about 101.1 cm. The full cutting diameter is about 202.2 cm.
| Check | Example result | Response |
|---|---|---|
| 150 cm usable fabric width | Diameter exceeds width by 52.2 cm | Use symmetrical panels |
| Full-circle hem length | More edge to support and finish | Test hanging and hem method |
| Waistband span | Longer band may stretch or twist | Choose suitable interfacing and seams |
The panel-layout guide turns the width failure into equal sectors without changing fullness. Reconfirm waist placement and length with the measurement guide, because a 2 cm error repeated around a large circumference wastes considerable fabric.
Drafting checks that matter
- Measure the actual wearing waist and hip-pass path; do not infer one from the other.
- Choose closure or pull-on construction before fixing the opening.
- Split oversized patterns into mirrored panels with consistent grain.
- Plan stable waist seams and interfacing; a longer waistband needs support, not arbitrary negative ease.
- Hang and level the assembled skirt before hemming.
For a pull-on option, use the elastic-waist guide to keep the opening large enough for the hips while fitting elastic independently.
Enter the actual measurements and fabric width in the calculator, then select panels from the resulting diameter rather than from a size label.
