Kids circle skirt measurement guide without age charts
Measure a child safely for a circle skirt using waist placement, movement ease, length, hip-pass checks, and planned growth allowance.

Children of the same age can have very different proportions, so an age chart is not a safe substitute for current measurements. Use this checklist as the measuring branch of the circle skirt pattern-making guide, with an adult supervising the entire process.
Safe measurement checklist
| Measurement | How to take it | Do not do this |
|---|---|---|
| Wearing waist | Place tape where the waistband will sit; allow easy breathing | Pull the tape tight or leave a dangling loop |
| Hip-pass path | Measure the widest route for a pull-on skirt | Assume the waist opening can pass the hips |
| Finished length | Measure from waistband to desired hem while standing normally | Measure near stairs, stools, or moving equipment |
| Movement check | Ask the child to sit and step while wearing a test elastic | Add unrestricted extra length near the feet |
An example may record a 58 cm wearing waist and 35 cm finished length, but those numbers are not an age size. Add wearing ease intentionally, and add growth allowance in an adjustable waistband or hem design rather than silently enlarging every pattern dimension.
Drafting decisions after measuring
- Repeat each measurement once and write it down immediately.
- Decide between a fitted closure and a pull-on elastic waist.
- For pull-on construction, use the larger hip-pass opening described in the elastic-waist guide.
- Keep seam and hem allowance separate from the 35 cm finished length.
- Avoid floor-length designs for active play unless the garment is specifically fitted and supervised.
The general circle skirt measurement guide explains how finished dimensions feed the draft. Re-measure before cutting if the notes are old or the intended wearing position changes.
